Scott City camp program offers variety of activities

For children, summertime is a chance to relax, explore and have fun. Thanks to the Scott City Interactive Park Program, they can continue to enjoy themselves while expanding their knowledge.

The SCIPP Summer Day Camp Program runs from June 20 to July 29. It is open to children ages 7 to 13 of any location and will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

Paul Schock, chairman of the SCIPP committee, said children are able to sign up on a per-week basis, as each week has a different theme.

He said they offer "a full array" of themes including: CSI week, explorer week, fun field trip week, arts and swim lessons week, sports week and tae kwon do and swim lessons week.

"This, for some children, is a great opportunity to explore things outside their own environment," he said.

Along with themed activity workshops, students will attend a movie every Wednesday afternoon in Cape Girardeau and a field trip every Friday afternoon. Other activities such as horseback riding, scavenger hunts and swimming at the Scott City pool will be offered throughout.

Field trip locations include among others the Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center and Arena Park, the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, Southeast Missouri State University Student Recreation Center and LeBounce Indoor Inflatable Play Center. A trip to Six Flags in St. Louis is scheduled for the last week of the camp for an additional $40 per student.

The total cost of the program is $100 per week for each student. Schock said that covers all costs.

SCIPP has collected $4,500 of donations from local businesses to use toward scholarships for children in need. Schock said they plan to award both full and partial scholarships. Scholarship applications are online at www.scottcityscipp.com or at city hall.

SCIPP is associated mainly with the Scott City Kiwanis Club and with the Scott City Women's Club and parks department.

Schock said the day camp program will allow students an opportunity to have experiences outside of their own town and offers a camaraderie between the camp leaders and guest speakers with the children.

"It will provide the ability to interact with other children and have a fun summer," he said. "It will really be a great time for them to be creative."
