Southeast Missouri's whopper snowstorm two weeks ago prompted Scott City School Board members to add some make-up days to the school calendar during their meeting Wednesday night.

Superintendent Diann Ulmer said Scott City students missed four and a half days before Christmas this year; missed days tend to occur more after the holiday.

Ulmer said this is the first time that has happened since the late 1980s. The board approved Friday, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, March 20 and March 24 as make-up days, with early dismissal Friday.

Other make-up days are May 21, 22 and 23, Ulmer said.

Other business

* Board members approved purchasing a school bus for $71,900 from Central States Bus Sales Inc. in Fenton, Mo. The purchase will go forward, pending approval from Ron Pratt, owner of Midwest Truck, who serves as the district's bus mechanic.

The bus is coming in off a lease, Ulmer said.

The district tried to buy one last year, but it didn't pass Pratt's inspection, Ulmer said. Scott City, which currently has 10 buses, last bought one a couple of years ago.

* The board heard incumbent board member Sally Porch filed for re-election Wednesday. The board has three seats up for election April 8. They are held by board president Scott Amick, who filed Tuesday, and board member Daniel Lance.

Filing began Tuesday and ends Jan. 21.
