Two L.J. Schultz Middle School students have discovered the rewards of good writing in a national essay contest sponsored by the California Table Grape Commission.
Jeff Miller and Elizabeth Green, both seventh-graders at Schultz, earned the contest's top prizes with their essays in the commission's "Project: Environment" contest.
As first-place winner in the contest, Miller received a 10-speed mountain bike. As second-place winner, Green received a three-person domed tent.
Approximately 300 entries were received in the competition, according to contest coordinator Karen Burke of Fresno, Calif.
The writers expressed their ideas for preserving the environment.
Miller is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Miller. Green is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Green. Both students are members of The Paw newspaper staff at Schultz.
