The Paw newspaper staff at L.J. Schultz Middle School has received many awards in competition this year. The paper has earned four national awards from Quill and Scroll International Society for High School Journalists. The staff also received 12 state awards from the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association, including a "superior" first-place rating in overall competition...

The Paw newspaper staff at L.J. Schultz Middle School has received many awards in competition this year.

The paper has earned four national awards from Quill and Scroll International Society for High School Journalists.

The staff also received 12 state awards from the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association, including a "superior" first-place rating in overall competition.

In Quill and Scroll's national contest, Gold Key awards are presented for top stories and photos from across the nation. Three students on the Paw staff received Gold Keys for their entries.

Christy Hey received the Gold Key for her general column Class of '98...Daring to be Different.

Since Quill and Scroll's contest runs from February to February. Stories that last year's Paw staff wrote after February were also eligible for the contest.

As a result, two eighth-graders also won gold Keys for stories they wrote last spring.

Vicki Ventrella won the Gold Key for her general column, "Cuts That Should Have Been," and Dustin Gross won the Gold Key for his sports photo, "Field Day Tug of War."

Only 40 Gold Keys were given to junior high school students nationwide.

Quill and Scroll selects the best entry in each photo or story division to receive the National Sweepstakes prize.

Holly Brantley was one of eight top national winners to receive the Sweepstakes Award for her feature photo, "The Day Quayle Came to Town."

In the state MIPA contest, staff awards included: Christy Hey, first place for her regular column Class of '98...Daring to be Different; Chris Bergerson, first place for his sports feature "New Sports Complex;" Holly Brantley, first place for her spot news photo "The Day Quayle Came to Town" and first place for her photo spread "Campaign '92."

The second place state award in the feature photo category also went to Brantley for her personality photo of Christy Hey.

Amanda Wyatt received third place for her academic story of contest winners. Shannon Randol received third place for her academic photo "Learning to Air Dribble."

Elizabeth Bedell received honorable mention for her personality photo of kindergarten students. Bill Morgan received honorable mention for his organization photo of Scholar Bowl. Shannon Randol also received honorable mention for his organization photo of Hat Day.

Brantley also received an honorable mention for her news story "Campaign '92."

The Paw has completed its eighth year of publication. The paper is sponsored by Schultz's Adopt-a-School partner, the Southeast Missourian.
