Schools throughout the country are marking American Education Week this week with open houses and a variety of other activities.

The theme for American Education Week is Better schools shape better tomorrows.

In Cape Girardeau public schools, open houses are planned at each school.

Monday: Clippard Elementary.

Tuesday: L.J. Schultz and the Vocational-Technical School.

Wednesday: May Greene Elementary.

Thursday: Washington Elementary, Central Junior High and Central High School.

Friday: Jefferson, Franklin and Alma Schrader elementary schools.

In addition, student artwork is being displayed at the Cape Girardeau public library and West Park Mall.

In Scott City, student artwork will be displayed at local businesses.

On Monday at 8:15 a.m. a reception is planned followed by a tour if the elementary library and then a visit to their grandchild's classroom. Also on Monday the Future Teachers Association will give apples and cards to all the school staff.

Scott City mayor has signed a proclamation designating the week. Guest readers from the community will visit each elementary classroom.

A booklet is being compiled of parents' ideas on homework tips that work.

At the Scott City Board of Education's meeting Wednesday, students will present board members with a gift each child has made.

Friday is spirit day and Teacher Appreciation Day by the Parent Teacher Organization.

In Jackson, the mayor has proclaimed American Education Week and posters are being displayed in each of the school buildings.

At Nell Holcomb, a variety of speakers will be visiting classrooms throughout the week. Among them is Joe Schenimann and his wife, Margie. The Schenimanns will talk with students about how the Nell Holcomb district was formed.

Visitors will also read books to students throughout the week.

A contest is also under way with students making posters commemorating American Education Week.
