Dr. Steve del Vecchio, business manager of the Cape Girardeau School District for the past five years, will leave the district this summer.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education accepted del Vecchio's resignation during a special meeting Monday. His resignation is effective June 30, the last day of the district's fiscal year.

Del Vecchio said he is considering a number of job options but has nothing definite.

"It's just time," said del Vecchio. "I've been here five years next month, and I've seen a lot of changes over the years."

Del Vecchio was hired in 1995 following the resignation of business manager Larry Dew. However, his association with the district dates back another five years: From 1990 until 1995 he annually tracked the district's spending in his role as audit manager for Hillin and Clark, an accounting firm.

He also taught at Southeast Missouri State University for 10 years.

Del Vecchio said he has seen numerous changes within the district, and probably the most positive change is an apparent surge of public support for Cape Girardeau schools and staff. "I think the biggest change is the receptiveness of the patrons of the district," he said. "I think I've seen the district come together somewhat to really do what's best for the kids, which is always a good feeling when you're in the school business."

Superintendent Dr. Dan Steska and Board of Education members said del Vecchio has worked hard in the district's behalf and it will be difficult to find someone with his knowledge of school finances and good business management.

"Steve is really very knowledgeable about what was going on, and I'm going to miss him," Steska said.
