A sculpture crafted by a Cape Girardeau doctor will be dedicated Wednesday at Southeast Missouri State University.
The ceremony is scheduled for noon in the sculpture garden just north of the Art Building, where the piece by Dr. Jean Chapman, an allergist, will be permanently displayed.
Chapman donated the art work to the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. Chapman's father, Vernon Chapman, served as superintendent of buildings and grounds at the school for more than half a decade.
Following the dedication, Chapman will present a lecture at 12:30 p.m. in room 300 of the Art Building.
The sculpture, titled "Elizabeth," is a female figure carved in a piece of dolomite limestone. Chapman obtained the limestone from Kiefner Brothers Inc. during the construction company's recent excavation work at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
"Elizabeth" pays tribute to the late Elizabeth Kiefner, a patient for whom Chapman cared until her death. Kiefner's son, Ed, is president of Kiefner Brothers Inc. Ed Kiefner says Chapman has been a family friend for many years and that Chapman "went well beyond the call of duty" in caring for his mother.
