JACKSON 20The school bells will ring a little earlier next fall for students in the Jackson R-2 School District.

The school board adopted the district's 1991-92 annual school calender Tuesday and heard reports about upcoming meetings.

Superintendent Wayne Maupin said the 185-day calender includes 176 days of classroom instruction, three teacher workshop days, one parent-teacher conference day, one end-of-school work day, four holidays and 4 inclement weather days.

That led board member John Lorberg to ask, humorously, "No earthquake days?" Maupin replied, "No sir, at least not yet."

The superintendent said the biggest change in the calender is the end of the first semester on Dec. 20, instead of early January. That will eliminate the January semester break, he said.

The school year begins earlier this fall. The board delayed opening of school last September to allow completion of the new elementary school.

Maupin said the spring semester is longer next year because of end-of-school activities involving seniors and the week-long Missouri Mastery Achievement Testing.

According to the new calender, school opens Aug. 22, following a three-day teacher orientation Aug. 19-21.

School will not be in session on these days: Labor Day, Sept. 2; Parent-Teacher Conference Day, Nov. 8; the Thanksgiving Day break, Nov. 28-29, the Christmas break, Dec. 20-Jan. 2; President's Day, Feb. 17, 1992; District Teacher's Meeting, March 13, 1992; and Spring Break, April 17-20, 1992.

The last day of school is tentatively set for May 21, 1992, if there are no inclement weather days to make up. Dates for the baccalaureate and commencement exercises will be determined later.

In the current school year, Maupin reported the district will host the Missouri School Boards Association District 13 regional meeting on March 7. About 100 area board members are expected to attend.

The superintendent, along with other administrators, the local Missouri State Teachers Association chapter president, and student body president, will drive to Jefferson City on March 6 to attend the MSTA's "Day of Concern," about future public school funding by the legislature.
