Editor's Note: The duration of the Coach Dick Wadlington Athletic Scholarship has been clarified below.
An $800 nonrenewable scholarship honoring coach Dick Wadlington has been established through the Cape Girardeau Public Schools Foundation. The scholarship will be available for the next 25 years.
The Coach Dick Wadlington Athletic Scholarship application is available to students who attended or are attending Cape Girardeau Central High School. The applicant must have a minimum 2.0 grade-point average and play on an athletics team. The recipient will be selected by a committee formed by the foundation.
Applications are available through the foundation office or by visiting capeschools.org. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2016.
During his career, which began in 1976, Wadlington coached the women's golf team, the junior-varsity men's basketball team and the men's varsity basketball team.
Later in his career, he served as varsity golf coach. His golf teams won multiple team championships and individual accomplishments, with numerous golfers qualifying in the state tournament and moving on to collegiate golf careers.
He resigned at the beginning of the 2013-2014 golf season for health reasons.
A news release from the school district says his resignation was a loss to the high school and the Southeast Missouri high-school golf community.
