KANSAS CITY -- Schnucks Markets, Inc., and the Fleming Companies, Inc., have announced Schnucks acquisition of Fleming's Food 4 Less supermarket at 135th and Mur-Len in Olathe, Kansas, and Checkers supermarket in the Highland Plaza on 119th Street near Switzer in Overland Park.
At the same time, both companies announced that Fleming will become the supplier of grocery and frozen food products for all Schnuck supermarkets in the Kansas City area. Fleming will also act as a secondary supplier to all other Schnucks stores. Schnucks currently has two Kansas City area stores, 50 in metropolitan St. Louis, and eight stores in other cities, including Cape Girardeau.
In making this announcement, Matt Jonas, president of the Heartland Division of Fleming, said, "We are very pleased to add the Schnucks stores to the other quality stores we currently supply through our Heartland Division. They are a premier regional chain and have been successful in every area they serve."
Craig Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer of Schnuck Markets, said, "We are very pleased with the acquisition of the Fleming locations. The Kansas City area has been an excellent market for us, and we are looking forward to a second store in Overland Park, and to serving the people of Olathe."
The Food 4 Less store in Olathe will close in late June for remodeling. The Checkers store in Highland Plaza will close in August. Both stores are approximately 55,000 square feet in size, and will be converted to Schnucks (food and pharmacy) Super Centers.
Schnucks operates two stores presently in the Kansas City area, at 93rd and Metcalf in Overland Park, and at 65th and Quivira in Shawnee. This acquisition of the Food 4 Less and Checkers supermarkets, along with the previously announced store to be constructed at 77th and State Line in Prairie Village, give Schnuck Markets a very strong presence in Johnson County.
