SCOTT CITY -- The Scott City Chamber of Commerce announced that it has raised more than $1,700 toward the purchase of new "Welcome to Scott City" signs to be placed near the exit ramps on I-55.
At last week's chamber meeting, a committee was appointed to "see what they can get for $1,700," said Shirley Young, the chamber's president.
Also at the meeting, the chamber drew three names from those who donated money to the sign fund. The winner of the $100 in meat was Jack L. Burnett. The winner of the $75 U.S. savings bond was Brenda Halbert; the winner of the $50 savings bond was Doug Berry.
Berry and Halbert donated their prize money to the sign fund.
The students who set up "roadblocks" to raise money for the sign were also honored at the meeting. The students were each given a certificate of appreciation and the student coordinator of the event, Nichole Wadlington, was given a plaque.
After the new signs are erected, the chamber hopes to have a pizza party for all the students who helped in the effort, Young said.
