Rick Saupe has been characterized as one who "does everything under cover and behind the scenes to get stuff done," without seeking credit.

This unselfish attitude and devotion to the Jackson Jaycees and the club's projects earned the Pocahantas Lumber employee the Jaycee's 1999 Distinguished Service Award. Saupe, who said he became suspicious when he saw his parents at the DSA Banquet Thursday night at Delmonico's, was surprised by the award.

"It means a lot," he said, thinking his fellow members. "Looking around and seeing so many past recipients, I don't feel like I deserve it."

His fellow club members disagreed with that modest assessment.

"He makes big events happen and doesn't worry about who gets the pat on the back for it," said President Randy Sander.

Immaculate Conception Principal Tracy Dumey, meanwhile, was named Outstanding Young Educator of the Year. Sander displayed a giant poster with letters and signatures of IC students and staff, nominating Dumey for the honor.

"I want to think everyone here," Dumey said. "I see a lot of staff members here tonight. What makes me effective is all of you."

Darrell Sievers of the Jackson Police Department was named Outstanding Young Public Servant.

"He's earned the admiration and respect of a log of youth in town," Sander said. "They can tell he's someone who has genuine concern for them."

Sievers also stepped in and helped coordinate the joint Food Basket/Bundle of Joy Christmas program and "pull it together," in the president's words.

Donnie Harris, owner of Senior Benefit Service and Just Kids day cares, was honored as Outstanding Young Businessperson of the Year. Sander noted that Harris started his first business at age 13 and has succeeded in numerous types of business endeavors.

Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year honors, meanwhile, went to Scott Beggs. Beggs, Sander said "has been involved in an apple orchard his entire life."

"He's always more than willing to help us and is very dedicated to his work, his employees and his family," he noted.

Mayor Paul Sander, a long-time Jaycee, gave the keynote speech. He credited groups like the Jaycees with making Jackson "a much better place to live, work and raise a family."
