JACKSON -- Mayor Paul Sander announced he will seek a second term as Jackson mayor.
Sander, 39, served seven years on the Jackson Board of Aldermen before he was elected mayor in 1993. He defeated 11-term incumbent Carlton "Cotton" Meyer, pledging to maintain an open-door policy with city employees and residents.
"I enjoy the job of mayor, which is very demanding with a growing city," Sander said. "One hundred percent of the public cannot be made happy by every decision of the council, but I work for what I feel is in the best interest of Jackson."
The mayor has supported a variety of projects during his term, including implementation of the city's first five-year plan for capital improvements and the purchase of the current downtown Boatmen's Bank building to be utilized as a new city hall.
Sander is associated with Heartland Realty. He and his wife, Pam, have two children: Sam, 6, and Spencer, 2.
Filing for the mayor's seat will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday and close at 5 p.m. Jan. 31. Four aldermen's seats and the city collector's position will also be open.
