After a weeklong extension, the Salvation Army's Tree of Lights campaign reached its goal.
The campaign raised $125,469 during the holiday season, said chairwoman Carol Keeler.
The money, which is about one-third of the agency's budget, will be used to assist individuals during the new year.
"It is used for Christmas assistance and then for programs and services in 1995," said Salvation Army Capt. Elmer Trapp. "We would have liked to have made it by the end of the season, but it was still a successful campaign."
Since 1988, the Tree of Lights campaign has almost doubled its fund-raising levels, Trapp said.
For every $250 donation, one light on the tree is illuminated. By the end of the campaign, 5,000 lights had been lit.
The campaign assisted more than 5,000 people during the holidays, Trapp said.
Donations are still being accepted for the campaign. They can be sent to the Salvation Army Tree of Lights Campaign, Box 802, Cape Girardeau, MO, 63702-0802.
