A new study by an independent health care ratings organization has named Saint Francis Medical Center among the top 10 percent in orthopedic surgery.

The recently released HealthGrades study analyzed about 40 million patient outcomes in 5,000 hospitals throughout the United States from 2006 to 2008. The Cape Girardeau hospital received a five-star rating, the highest possible, for overall orthopedics, hip fracture repair, total hip replacement and total knee replacement.

HealthGrades' study found that patients treated at highly rated hospitals such as Saint Francis Medical Center had a 52 percent lower chance of mortality compared to hospitals that earned one star.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian Schafer said the rating is a culmination of work that began when the Center for Joint Replacement for established in November 2007.

"It's taken a lot of work and effort to get where we are today," Schafer said. "We've had a great relationship between Orthopaedics Associates and Saint Francis hospital to bring this level of orthopedics to the community. I'm extremely proud of that."
