The Cape Girardeau Safe Communities program is taking registrations for the annual Safety Village program.
Safety Village is an educational program that introduces safety awareness and prevention procedures to children ages 6-9. The curriculum will focus on traffic safety in areas of bicycles, pedestrians, school bus, seat belts and railroad crossings. Additional areas of emphasis will be fire and emergency response.
During this course, students will learn through their own involvement. A police officer will instruct the course and will be assisted by trained volunteers.
The program consists of an indoor classroom where children will observe and participate in safety activities, and an outdoor layout consisting of a miniature town complete with sidewalks, crosswalks, street markings, railroad crossings and traffic lights where children practice and experience simulated situations.
Program sessions are four days in length, from 9-11:30 a.m. Monday to Thursday.
Sessions run from June 11-22 and July 9-27. Registration, which is limited, costs $10.
