'Safety City' registration to be held Saturday

An annual pedestrian, fire and cycling safety clinic, "Safety City USA," sponsored by the Jackson Noon Optimist Club, will hold registration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Healthpoint Fitness, 410 W. Main St., Jackson.

Geared for kindergarten to third-graders, the program teaches children the rules of the road and other safety measures with videos and instruction by the Jackson Noon Optimist Club and Jackson's fire and police departments. The focus is on traffic safety rules to be practiced on a bike, in a car and on in-line skates and skateboards. It will also cover drug awareness, fire safety and "stranger danger." Each session is two hours.

Hands-on experience will include practicing safety activities on the miniature roadway, "Safety City," in Jackson City Park. Bicycles, a few with training wheels, will be furnished for use in the program. Each child will receive a free bicycle helmet at the session.

Registration is first come-first served, and children who have previously attended are encouraged to sign up for a refresher course this year. There is a fee. Each child will receive a Safety City T-shirt and a variety of safety-related items at registration.
