The Wal-Mart Supercenter in Cape Girardeau and the giant retail chain are sponsoring Community Safety Awareness Week.
The week of awareness activities began Saturday.
More than 1,900 Wal-Mart stores across the nation are participating in the project.
"Wal-Mart associates care about our customers and their safety," said Kevin Kearney of the Cape Girardeau Wal-Mart Supercenter.
The Wal-Mart stores will have a number of displays and programs about safety throughout the week.
Volunteers from local conservation and fire departments will offer gun and fire safety tips. Also on hand will be National Guard medics, volunteers from the American Red Cross, the Cape Girardeau Ambulance Service, the Air-Evac helicopter, KBSI Kids Club, SafeKids, McGruff the Crime Dog, the Crash Dummies, Buckle-Bear and Freddie the Fire Truck.
Automotive safety checks will be offered, as well as fingerprinting of children, Kearney said.
