Training for approximately 60 volunteers for the new Safe House for Women, Inc. will take place Friday evening and all day Saturday at St. Francis Medical Center's education department.
Colleen Coble, executive director for the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic Violence will be the trainer. She will be assisted by Jackie Nielson of the Social Work Department at Southeast Missouri State University.
Volunteers include members of women's organizations, churches and students.
Topics to be covered during the training sessions include myths and facts, statistics and historical perspectives, abusive and violent relationships, characteristics of batterers and battered women, and children of violence.
The volunteers also will be trained in skills for hotline and crisis line coverage and the role of the advocate.
