The Safe House for Women has received approval from the Missouri Department of Economic Development to conduct a $28,000 fund-raising campaign offering qualified businesses and individuals credit on their state income taxes.

The safe house will use the funds raised to complete payments on its mortgage, do some needed repairs, and staff its program.

All corporations, banks and partnerships, plus individual partners and shareholders in S-corporations, sole proprietors, farmers and individuals with rental income are eligible for the credit.

Those using the credit may subtract one-half of their contribution from their corporate or individual income tax liability.

The Neighborhood Assistance Program was created in 1978. Since then, more than 7,400 businesses have given $125 million to the program's projects.

This program enables businesses to redirect tax dollars to help finance local projects. Acting as an incentive for business involvement, the state tax credit not only stretches the amount a business might normally be able to give, but it provides an opportunity for private business, state government and the nonprofit sector to cooperate as "partners" in addressing community needs.

More information and the forms necessary for receiving the tax credits can be obtained from Pat Strom, project director, at 334-2917.
