TAMMS, Ill. -- Incumbent mayors will face challenges in Southern Illinois elections April 1.

Elections are scheduled at Tamms, Thebes and Olive Branch in Alexander County; at Mounds, Mound City and Olmsted in Pulaski County; and at Jonesboro, Mill Creek, Alto Pass and Dongola in Union County.

Filing is complete, but county clerks will not receive the list of candidates until early next week.

Tamms

Three candidates, including Mayor Walter Pang, have filed for mayor of Tamms.

Pang, who was first elected mayor in 1989, and was re-elected in 1993, is seeking his third term. Pang has served as a Tamms official 12 years; he was a village trustee from 1985 through 1989.

Others filing for Tamms mayor are Carl Hileman, a retired postmaster who is a town trustee, and Sheila Kee.

Three trustee positions for four-year terms also will be filled. The terms of Charles Hood, Lester Pickett and James Greenley will be up for grabs. Hood and Pickett have filed for re-election. Also filing was Larry Essex, who is serving an unexpired term, and Harry Strong.

Olmsted

In Olmsted, Jim Burd wants his old job back.20Burd, who was mayor of Olmsted for 24 years, lost in 1993 by a narrow six-vote margin to Elmer Rose. Burd has filed for mayor, as has Rose. A third candidate is Randy Neely.

Five candidates have filed for three aldermanic seats at Olmsted. They are incumbents Curtis Marshall, Gary Stephens and Keith Stricker, and challengers Donie Sheffer and Bobby Killus.

Mound City

Sam Johnson, a winner over longtime mayor Frederick Winkler in 1993, has filed for re-election at Mound City. Also filing for mayor was Dirk E. Posey.

Two candidates will be unopposed for Mound City Board of Aldermen: incumbents Harry Dover in Ward 2 and Linda Johnson in Ward 1. Incumbent Cleveland Forbes is being challenged by Tim Schaal in Ward 3.

Louise Calvin, who has been Mound City clerk more than 25 years, is unopposed for that position. Shirley Koen is unopposed for city treasurer.

Mounds

John Britton Jr. and Bob Lasley will be candidates at Mounds. Britton is serving an unexpired term of Marguerite Ward, who resigned as mayor for health reasons. Ward served as a city official at Mounds for more than 15 years, 12 as mayor.

Noel Roberson, alderman in Ward 1, and Glynn Beegle in Ward 2 are unopposed. Two candidates have filed for Ward 3: Robert Marler and Charles Willis.

April Jackson, incumbent city treasurer at Mounds, will face Debra Severs. Sue Gulley is unopposed for city clerk.

Jonesboro

Mayor Randy Tucker has filed for re-election at Jonesboro in Union County. He will face challenger William Bowen Jr.

Two races have developed for Jonesboro aldermen. Archie Hazel and Beverly Schaefer filed for a two-year term in Ward 2, and incumbent Everett Morgan will face Joe Hileman in Ward 1. Incumbent Ken Blandford is unopposed in Ward 3, and Ken Lacy is unopposed in Ward 2.

City Clerk Irma Kelley and City Treasurer Judith Lyerla are unopposed.
