A well pump broke down Saturday afternoon, leaving residents of a rural Cape Girardeau subdivision without water.
The Hillcrest Subdivision on Route K, west of Cape Girardeau, has about 160 homes and apartments.
They are served by a private water and sewer system operated by Hillcrest Utilities Co.
The pump went out about 12:30 p.m., said Amanda Koehler, who manages the private utility.
"We have someone working on the problem," she said late Saturday afternoon.
Water service was expected to be restored to the subdivision by late Saturday night.
Koehler advised residents to boil their water for up to 24 hours after service resumes.
