After 16 years, Scott City has a new mayor: Ron Cummins.
The race was close, with Cummins receiving 54.41 percent of the vote. Incumbent Mayor Tim Porch received 45.59 percent of the vote, with 100 percent of the precincts reporting.
Turnout for the election was considerably low. Out of 23,224 registered voters, only 14.49 percent of them turned out at the polls.
“Thank you to Tim Porch for his 16 years of service to the people of Scott City,” Cummins said after hearing the election results.
Cummins said he looks forward to helping the citizens of Scott City and moving forward with the promises made during his campaign.
“Thank you to all the citizens of Scott City for their support,” Cummins said.
A number of other contested races took place Tuesday. In Ward 1, Councilman Bill Schwartz received 54.38 percent of the vote over challenger Darren Raines, who received 45.62 percent.
In Ward 3, there was three-way race among former councilman Robert Tyler, Bobby Bollinger II and Matthew Koehler to replace retiring councilman Pete Wadlington. Koehler received 45.59 percent of the vote, Bollinger received 25.98 percent, and Tyler received 28.43 percent.
In the city of Morley, three candidates sought two seats on the board of aldermen. Fifty percent of the vote went to Charles Freed. Earl Woods and Tim Fodge split the remaining vote, with Woods receiving 31.06 percent and Fodge receiving 18.18 percent. One write-in candidate received a vote as well.
In the Village of Blodgett, David Russell and Cheryl McDonnold were voted into seats on the board of aldermen, receiving 39.36 and 25.00 percent of the vote respectively. Richard Riley received 19.68 percent of the vote, and Kenneth Plunk received 15.96 percent.
Several school-board seats also were up for election Tuesday. Voters in the Oran School District had the opportunity to choose two board members. Garrett Cook and Carrie Massey received the majority of the vote, with 30.77 percent and 25.43 percent, respectively. James Watkins took in 23.29 percent and Clare Urhahn received 20.51 percent.
Voters in the Scott County Central School District chose Lucy Alberson and Travis Glueck for two open school board positions, grabbing 32.35 and 31.60 percent of the vote respectively. Melette Pobst received 16.79 percent, Carmen Thomas took in 19.01 percent, and a write-in candidate received one vote, 0.25 percent.
Voters in Scott and Mississippi counties voted on two open school board seats in the Kelly School District. Adjusted to include both counties, John Felter received 21.73 percent of the vote and Roger Neumeyer received 21.39 percent of the vote in this close race. Kindel Ward took in 19.88 percent. Kellie Bridges got 18.61 percent, and Jerry Wolsey received 17.92 percent.
