Roger Hudson will be Cape Girardeau County's treasurer for four more years.

Hudson, a Republican, won the nod over Democratic challenger Deborah McBride Young, garnering 19,431 votes, more than double Young's 9.621, Hudson raised nearly 12 times the amount Young did, taking in nearly $12,000 in contributions compared to her $1,000.

"I just appreciate the people's confidence in me. I'll give them four more years of hard work," he said. Hudson's experience includes making multimillion-dollar transactions during a career in the poultry export business.

During his first term of office, he created an investment policy for the county and worked to make his office better reflect standards set by state statutes. He improved the spending plan for Proposition 1 revenue, extending it beyond the original five-year plan and developed checks and balances for the county's new online surplus auction plan.

Hudson said in his upcoming term, he expects to expand and improve the county's unclaimed property process, launched with the county's new website last week. He said he will also find ways to minimize the risk of Internet fraud and payment processes.

"We try to improve every day. We all have to work together," he said.

It was Young's second attempt to gain a county office. She ran for the county administrator's job in the 2004, but lost to Phyllis Schwab.
