Restrictions for Cairo bridge extended
CAIRO, Ill. -- Work to maintain and repair the U.S. 51 Ohio River bridge between Wickliffe, Ky., and Cairo, which has restricted traffic to a 7-foot maximum vehicle width and 19-foot maximum vehicle length, has been extended to Sept. 22. According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 acting chief engineer Mike McGregor, weather delays have put the project about a week behind schedule. Work zone restrictions prohibit trucks, buses, motor homes and vehicles pulling trailers from crossing the bridge. Other key elements of the work zone include no dual-wheeled vehicles, barrier walls for worker safety, and a 24-hour police presence with strict work-zone enforcement. The bridge project will repair deck stringers, replace 10 joints and approaches, and patch the deck.
