Work on Cairo bridge to restrict traffic beginning July 22
CAIRO, Ill. -- Work to maintain and repair the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Ky., and Cairo will restrict traffic to a 7-foot maximum load width beginning at 9 a.m. July 22. The work zone restriction will prohibit trucks, buses, motor homes and vehicles pulling trailers from crossing the bridge for approximately 56 days. "This project includes repairs to deck stringers and replacement of 10 joints on the bridge and approaches," Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 chief engineer Jim LeFevre said in a news release. "It will also include some deck patching." The work zone restrictions will remain in place until about Sept. 14. In addition to the strictly enforced 7-foot maximum vehicle width, the turn radius on a curve at the Kentucky end of the bridge will prohibit vehicles more than 19 feet long, dual-wheeled vehicles and vehicles pulling trailers from crossing. This will essentially limit the bridge to passenger vehicles and light trucks until the work is completed. Alternating traffic flow at the work zone will be controlled by a manually operated, temporary traffic signal.
