VAN BUREN, Mo. -- Many long-held events in Ozark National Scenic Riverways have been canceled because of across-the-board mandated federal spending cuts.

The Heritage Day, Alley Spring Independence Day Celebration, Ozark Dinner Theater and Haunting in the Hills events are canceled, pending action on budget cuts, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways faces a loss of nearly $327,000 in funding because of sequestration and says the public should prepare for reduced hours and services provided by employees.

"We want to inform the public of these potential impacts as they make their vacation plans," said superintendent Bill Black.

The loss also could include eliminating interpretive programs, evening campfire programs and Round Spring Cave tours in one park district. The Big Spring Campground will be open during the summer, but is planned to be closed the rest of the year. Trash collection, water service and restroom janitorial services are prepared to be eliminated or curtailed for all smaller campgrounds.

For more information, call 573-323-4852 during business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit the park's website at www.nps.gov/ozar.
