SCOTT CITY -- Director Jeff Roth says the Riverside Regional Library System's mission statement includes a commitment to providing "information, education, recreation and inspiration."

That goes for all six Riverside locations, and for both the children and adults who use them.

Last year, the Scott City location received a YELL grant to buy children's books, which now sit on the library's shelves. The Scott City location got the money, Roth said, because that was where people associated with Riverside rose early to hawk newspapers and raise money.

"One `L' in YELL stands for literacy, and that's what libraries are all about," he said. "We provide summer reading programs so that children who are out of school can keep learning."

Parents with children not yet in school can help their offspring by reading to them. Even infants can enjoy the soothing voice of a parent reading a story.

To encourage reading to children, the Riverside Regional Library will be starting an inter-generational program, matching senior citizens with children.

Roth said he and other Riverside associates will be up bright and early for YELL Day 1995, selling newspapers to collect more money for literacy.
