Riverside library group plans used book sale

The Friends of the Riverside Regional Library will hold its annual used book sale again this year at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park in the Famous Barr Court on April 6-7.

Proceeds will go to the library system's six branches -- Altenburg, Perryville, Jackson, Scott City, Benton and Oran.

Anyone wishing to help load books, set up or work during sale may contact a local branch, or visit the Riverside Regional Library's Web site at www.showme.net/rrl.

Prices will remain the same as last year -- 50 cents for hardbacks and 10 cents for paperbacks. New this year will be a "collector's books" table. These books will vary in price according to their appraised value.

Live band planned for dance on Saturday

The Kiwanis Club of Cape Girardeau will sponsor its popular Old Time Rock & Roll dance Saturday.

The dance, featuring Bruce "Hey Baby" Channel with the Crossfire Band, will be held at the A.C. Brase Arena Building.

Proceeds go to youth activities. Tickets are $7 in advance or $8 at the door. For more information, call 334-7716.

Senior Center dinner scheduled for Sunday

The Cape Girardeau Senior Center will host a chicken and dumplings and ham dinner on April 7. Serving time is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. Proceeds go to the center's building fund.

Take-home orders will be available.

Steamboat triathlon invites all comers

The 18th annual Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department's annual Steamboat Classic Triathlon will be held April 21 at the Central High School Municipal Pool.

The three-event race consists of a 500-yard swim, a 15.5-mile bicycle race over city and county roads and a 5-mile run through commercial and residential areas of the city.

Team and individual divisions will be offered.

Pennies from Heaven auction set for May

Dozens of baskets loaded with goodies and many other items will go on the block at the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation's annual Pennies from Heaven auction, to be held at the A.C. Brase Arena Building May 3.

The benefit auction begins with silent-bid items at 5 p.m. Chug Crites Auction Service will begin the oral auction at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The auction has raised more than $63,000 for We Can Weekend, a summer retreat for cancer patients and their families.

MS walk starts April 14 at Arena Park

The National Multiple Sclerosis Walk will be held in Cape Girardeau April 14 at Arena Park. Registration will be at noon, with the walk to start at 1 p.m.

"The MS walk is one of the society's most popular events because everyone can participate," said Robin White, chairwoman for the event. "Our fund-raising goal this year is $20,000."

Extension presents honor roll certificates

Chris and Lesa Weiss, Jane Wernsman and Marilyn Sievers have received leader honor roll certificates from the Cape County Extension Council.

Leader certificates are presented to community members who give outstanding service to the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension agency.

Chris and Lesa Weiss were honored for their assistance with the acquisition of land for the extension building and helping with the 4-H horsemanship program. Lesa Weiss served as county-wide horsemanship and entomology projects leader and provided leadership for the Cape Girardeau County horse judging team at the Missouri 4-H contest.

Wernsman, a registered nurse and assistant administrator at the Cape Girardeau County Health Department, has worked closely with Mary Gosche, the council's human development specialist, in coordinating the Postponing Sexual Involvement program in seven county schools. Wernsman also helps supervise teen leaders.

Sievers was honored for her many hours of service to the 4-H program and for serving as 4-H council treasurer for the past three years. She has served as community leader of the Progressive 4-H Club and has served on committees for a number of countywide 4-H events, including the recognition banquet and the annual 4-H achievement day.

Relay for Life scheduled for April 19-20 at park

The Cape Girardeau Relay for Life will be held at Capaha Park April 19-20. Opening ceremonies will be at 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday. Registration is $10 per team participant, with teams of eight to 15 people.

The annual event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Southeast fraternity to hold Rock-a-Thon

Alpha Phi Omega, a coed service fraternity at Southeast Missouri State University, will hold its fourth annual Rock-a-Thon April 6-7 at Hastings Books Music and Video at 3126 William in Cape Girardeau.

Starting at noon Saturday, fraternity members will be shifting back and forth in rocking chairs donated by Hutson's Furniture for 24 hours. Donations will go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Mobile office to visit Marble Hill, Jackson

U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's mobile office will make stops in Marble Hill and Jackson, Mo., on Thursday.

The mobile office will be at the Marble Hill Library from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and at the Jackson Chamber of Commerce office from 2-3 p.m.

Darren Lingle, mobile office director, will answer constituents' questions and write down their concerns.
