Entries will be taken through Friday for an open, judged quilt show set for Sept. 28- 29 in Cape Girardeau.

The two-day River Heritage Quilt Show to be held in the Family Life Center of Centenary United Methodist Church is open to entries from Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee.

Show hours will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 28 and 1-5 p.m. Sept. 29.

"This is a show for fun and to display our quilts that we love," said Jane Stodghill, quilt show chairman. "People shouldn't hesitate to put their quilts in the show."

The judged show is the first of its kind to be sponsored by the River Heritage Quilters' Guild which is composed of over 100 members from an area ranging roughly from Anna, Ill., to Poplar Bluff.

"All of us in the guild are so excited about every aspect of quilting and we want to share it," said Madeline Gieselman, president of the River Heritage Quilters' Guild. "We hope that the show is the start of a long tradition."

The show is composed of six categories: pieced; applique; group; miniature; wall hanging; and theme wall hanging. "Roses" -- reflecting the City of Cape Girardeau's slogan as "The City of Roses" -- is the show theme. Quilts entered in the show must have been made since 1991, Stodghill said.

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the winners.

Bonnie Kay Kirkland Browning, a certified quilt judge, will serve as judge of the show. Browning is show chairman with the American Quilters' Society in Paducah, Ky.

Laura Crews-Lewis, an internationally known quilt artist from Cape Girardeau, will conduct demonstrations during the show and display some of her quilt creations.

Thelma Stone, a Chaffee native and American Quilt Society Certified Appraiser, will appraise quilts during the show. Persons interested in having quilts appraised during the show must call 651-0780 to schedule appraisal appointments. Appraisal fee will be $25 a quilt.

Myriad exhibits, demonstrations and activities are planned for the weekend show. Admission will be $3.

Registration is necessary. For quilt entry registration information, call Jane Stodghill, 334-4110, or Glenda Nations, 243-4353.
