PERRYVILLE -- In one of the lowest voter turnouts in years, Tim Rhodes and Carolyn Pontillas became new members of the Perry County Board of Education.
An Emergency-911 issue passed by an 871-312 margin.
Perry County Clerk Randy Taylor said just 13 percent of registered voters went to the polls Tuesday. "That's one of the lowest turnouts in the nine years I've been here," Taylor said.
Rhodes got 785 votes followed by Pontillas with 730 and Randy P. Adams with 423. Rhodes and Pontillas will serve three-year terms on the school board, filling seats of two members who didn't seek re-election.
Rhodes and his wife, Sheila, have two children in the Perryville School District. Their oldest child is a graduate of Perryville High School. Rhodes has worked for McDonnell-Douglas for the past 10 years. He has been active as a coach in youth soccer and baseball.
Pontillas and her husband, Dr. Job Pontillas, have three children. The oldest is a junior at Perryville High School. The younger children are enrolled at St. Vincent's Middle School.
In the Perryville Ward 3 race for alderman, incumbent Gary J. Schumer won with a 127-86 decision over Harvey Schamburg.
In a race for hospital trustee, incumbents Bill Phillips Jr. and Ron Hohenadel reclaimed their posts. Hohenadel received 932 votes while Phillips got 756. Challenger Don Barry received 410 votes.
Constitutional Amendment No. 1 passed 702-358.
The special election proposition in the city of Altenburg failed 52-21. The proposition: Shall intoxicating liquor containing alcohol in excess of 5 percent be sold at retail for consumption on the premises where sold?
No other contests existed in Perry County.
