A retirees association with ties to the AFL-CIO has endorsed attorney Joe Allen in his bid to oust incumbent U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson in the Eighth Congressional District. The Alliance for Retired Americans, founded in 2001 and with a claimed membership of more than 3 million including 86,710 members in Missouri, endorsed the Democratic nominee because of his stands against privatizing Social Security, in favor of health care reform and his support for stronger retirement and pension security, according to a news release from Allen's campaign. Allen, of Forsyth, Mo., seeks to unseat Emerson, a Cape Girardeau Republican seeking her seventh term. Also on the ballot on Nov. 4 are Branden McCollough, a Cape Girardeau Libertarian, and Richard Smith of Mansfield on the Constitution Party ticket.
