The Cape Girardeau County Transit System recently announced it has concluded the purchase of the Kelley Transportation Co. and will offer a public bus and taxi service. The southeast Missourian's online poll asked, "Do you plan to use the transit authority's bus service?"

Due to rounding, percentages may not add up to 100. (283 votes cast)

  • No: 77 percent (218 votes)
  • Yes: 23 percent (65 votes)

Comments:

* "But those who need it will."

* "Though I live in Jackson and work in Cape, it will be an advantage to be able to save gas on shopping."

* "I am willing to bet, and you can call me to task on this, that 95 percent of people that read SE Missourian online will not be the people that will be using this service. Think about it ... If you are elderly and don't own a car do you think they have a computer? If you can't afford a car what are the chances they have computer systems at home?"

* "If there was a stop in Pocahontas that would bring me to Cape I would."

* "I rode the bus in St . Louis once. Once!"

* "No, it will be slow, dirty and never on time."

* "I do not live in Cape."

* "Yes! Who can afford a cab in this town? We've needed bus service for years. Not just for seniors, but for working people, students, etc."

* "I ride a bicycle for most of my transportation needs, but a bus service will be especially helpful on shopping errands."

* "Cause I don't live there."

* "The proof will be in the pudding. If the buses are maintained as clean, no-smoking vehicles and they go on a regular schedule, I plan to use it. Otherwise, it will be a big boondoggle. Why the transit paid Kelley so much for the cab service is beyond me."

* "They need to have a pick up on Highway 177."

* "I'm sorry, but from a financial standpoint, every city I know of which has public transportation finds that this is a black hole."

* "No, but I still think it's a good idea."

* "But I don't know if I can reach it. Or if there will be seats set up so I can sit down. I can't sit for long periods of time. I'm on disability."

* "I am glad it will be available to those in need, and I support having it. But for myself, unless it was truly like a big city that you could either go direct from point A to point C, or switch lines to go from point A to point C by going through a point b or hub."

* "I am so glad we are moving toward getting more public transportation. It's about time Cape Girardeau caught up with other cities of comparable size."

* "They put friends of mine out of work as they were lowing their wages and they wouldn't make it on what they want to pay them."

* "I think the prices the transit has set is out of this world. I do not understand how they plan on low-income families using their system, $12 for a one-way to Jackson is just way too much."

* "Just another example of my tax dollars at waste -- I mean work."
