CAIRO, Ill. -- Restrictions that have prohibited truck traffic and other large vehicles from crossing the U.S. 51 Ohio River bridge between Cairo and Wickliffe, Ky., because of maintenance and repair work were lifted about noon Wednesday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced. A detour around the bridge has been in place since July 29. "On average, 5,500 vehicles cross the bridge each day. About 35 percent is truck traffic. That meant an extended detour for about 1,900 vehicles each day," Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 acting chief engineer Mike McGregor said in a news release. Work included repairs to deck stringers, replacement of 10 joints on the bridge and approaches and deck patching. Concrete pavement also was installed at the intersection of U.S. 51, U.S. 60 and U.S. 62 in Wickliffe, according to the news release.
