ST. LOUIS Two area residents were given special awards at the American Lung Association's annual meeting Friday in St. Louis. ST. LOUIS Two area residents were given special awards at the American Lung Association's annual meeting Friday in St. Louis.

Cape Girardeau City Councilman Melvin Gateley and Carol Riggs, R.N., were honored at the meeting.

Gateley received the American Lung Association's 2000 Award on behalf of Cape Girardeau's Smoke Free Class of 2000 program. The award is presented to a business, group or organization that has made strides toward a smoke-free society by the year 2000.

Riggs, a nurse at St. Francis Hospital, received the Outstanding Volunteer Award for serving on the Cape Superkids Planning Committee and for volunteering as camp nurse for the past ten years.

The American Lung Association of Eastern Missouri was founded in 1907 and serves the citizens of Eastern Missouri from its headquarters in St. Louis and branch offices in Columbia and Cape Girardeau.

Programs and services include Camp Superkids, a camp for children with severe asthma and a Flu Shot Telephone Hotline to direct over 10,000 "at risk" individuals to flu shot clinics.
