ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The Humane Society of Missouri is rescuing four dozen dogs and several horses believed to be endangered on a property in northeast Missouri.

The group says it is working with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, which issued a warrant that was served Wednesday. The rescue involves more than 50 dogs and several horses on a property near Madison.

The Humane Society says many of the animals are thin and have upper respiratory problems or hair loss. They lack shelter, food and water.

The Humane Society will have custody of the animals pending a court ruling on ownership.

Authorities have been working for years with the owner about providing proper care for the animals.
