CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Skeletal remains found in Mississippi County earlier this month have been identified.

The remains belong to 20-year-old Eli Culp, who is presumed to have drowned Aug. 15 near Cairo, Ill., Mississippi County Coroner Terry Parker said in a news release Tuesday.

A worker with Fitzgerald Marine Service discovered the remains Jan. 4 near Belmont, Mo., on an eroding bank of the Mississippi River.

"The water level was very low in the area at that time, allowing the remains to be visible," Parker said.

The bones were sent to a forensic anthropologist with the St. Louis County medical examiner's officer for identification. Positive identification was made through dental records provided by Culp's family.

"Ante-mortem and post mortem dental comparisons were also consistent," said Parker. "No artifacts, clothing or associated personal effects were discovered."

Parker said the remains will now be released to a funeral home designated by Culp's family.
