Residents of Jackson made a giant step toward a cure for cancer on Aug. 4-5, when they walked throughout the night during Relay for Life, the signature event of the American Cancer Society.
More than 10 teams and 150 people came together during this year's Relay to raise in excess of $15,000. Money raised during Relay for Life helps fund the research, education, advocacy, and service programs of the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is the largest nonprofit supporter of new cancer research and the largest voluntary health organization fighting cancer in our country.
"All the hard work and planning by the many volunteers made this a successful event," said Amy Evans, development specialist with the American Cancer Society. "The teams did a great job of raising funds to continue the fight against cancer."
D's Angels team from Do-It Best was the top fundraising team at the event, raising $2,753.31. The top individual was Mary Underwood who raised $465.
Relay for Life is a family-oriented event where participants enjoy the camaraderie of a team and also raise funds to support the activities of the American Cancer Society. Participants camp out in the stadium and when they are not taking their turn walking or running, take part in fun activities and enjoy local entertainment. Relay for Life also raises awareness about cancer by honoring cancer survivors.
The Relay kicked off at 6 p.m. at Jackson City Park, when 20 cancer survivors kicked off the event by walking the first lap. A luminary ceremony at 10 p.m. illuminated the entire track as participants lit luminary candles in memory of those who've lost the battle to cancer and in support for those still fighting the disease.
At the closing ceremony, corporate sponsors were recognized for their contribution. Sponsors for this year's event included Wal-Mart Supercenter, Missouri Plastics and Recycling, L.L.C., and KWKZ 106.1.
