The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Cape Girardeau County kicks off at 5:30 p.m. today when event volunteers and participants gather at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
Today's rally is the launch of the year's fundraising efforts, with the annual overnight relay set for June 14 at Arena Park.
One in every 100 Americans participates in the annual relay, which has become a global phenomenon, according to a news release from the local organization. Activities will include recognizing local cancer survivors during the Survivors Lap; remembering cancer victims during the luminaria ceremony; and the Fight Back ceremony, which focuses on taking action against cancer.
The kickoff event will provide information about the relay including how to start a relay team, team registration, fundraising ideas and volunteer opportunities.
Donations may be made to the local Relay For Life event by visiting relayforlife.org, which also has information about starting or joining a team.
More information is available by contacting Kelli Schenimann at 334-9352.
