JACKSON - Registration for the Jackson Noon Optimist Club's Safety City USA will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Jackson City Hall on South High Street.
Beverly Nelson, a member of the club, explained Safety City is an educational program that introduces safety awareness and preventive procedures to children ages 6-10.
"The curriculum will focus on traffic safety in the areas of bicycle, pedestrian, school bus, seat belts, and railroad crossings," Nelson said. "Additional areas of emphasis will be fire, poison, water, and emergency response. During the safety course, children will learn through their own involvement."
Nelson said three, two-and-one-half-hour sessions will be held each day on June 6, 13, 20, and 27 at Safety City, now under construction in the City Park. The session fee is $7 per child. Because of class size, registration will be on a limited basis.
Nelson said the program consists of class time, where children will observe and participate in safety activities, and an outdoor layout consisting of a miniature town complete with sidewalks, crosswalks, and street markings, where children practice and experience simulated situations.
As part of the program, each child will receive a bicycle helmet that will be worn while participating in the program. After completing the session, the child keeps the helmet.
Members of the Jackson Noon Optimist Club will instruct the course, assisted by trained youth volunteers from Senior Girl Scout Troop 241. A uniformed Jackson police officer will also assist in each session.
For more information, contact Nelson from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 243-4404 or Robin Thompson at 243-8859.
