STEELE, Mo. -- While the South Pemiscot High School was under a lockdown Wednesday due to an argument between two male students, two female students started a fight about 9 a.m. Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department arrested the two girls and held them in the county jail on a $2,047 bond. According to a statement released by the sheriff's department, the school did not order a mandatory lockdown but issued a lockdown as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Man charged in death put on house arrest

James Edward Jankowski, 41, has been placed on electronic monitoring at his mother's Bernie, Mo., residence after his release from Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Jankowski has been charged with felony first-degree involuntary manslaughter and felony of driving while intoxicated for his part in the death of 48-year-old Dexter resident Richard "Rick" Watkins on March 30. Because of his injuries, Jankowski was released on bond and placed on house arrest, Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner said.
