Cape Rose Hills Garden Club marks 50 years

The Rose Hills Garden Club marked its 50th anniversary Monday with an elegant tea and display of past honors.

The event was celebrated at the Chateau Girardeau, and former members were invited.

The group is one of several garden clubs in Cape Girardeau and helps maintain the rose display garden in Capaha Park and the Freedom Corner. The group also helps maintain the landscaping at the Parkview School and at other sites.

There are 20 members, and the group is looking for more of all ages. New members need only be interested in flowers and gardens.

Jo Dee Messina concert postponed to Nov. 18

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Joe Dee Messina concert scheduled for Friday at the SIU Arena has been postponed due to the national tragedy of Sept. 11. The concert has been rescheduled for Nov. 18.

Tickets for the original date will be honored.

Strong-armed robbery reported in Sikeston

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston authorities are searching for a person who allegedly committed a strong-armed robbery Saturday.

The incident occurred at 8:48 p.m. Saturday at a Center Street business called the Manhattan Room.

Police Sgt. Michael Williams said cash was forcibly taken from the victim's pocket during a party. He said no weapon was evident.

Sewing family reunion scheduled for Sunday

The 30th annual Sewing family reunion will be held at noon Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church Parish Hall in Friedheim, Mo. Meat will be provided. Families should bring dishes of vegetables, salads and desserts, and bring their own table service.

Relief efforts will get proceeds from theaters

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Malco Trio Theaters of Sikeston will join other members of America's movie industry in holding a "Victims' Benefit Day at the Movies."

Today, 100 percent of ticket and concession sales will be donated to the "September 11th Fund." Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross and 50 percent will be donated to the United Way.

"We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to all those whose lives were so painfully altered by last week's terrible events in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania," said Larry Myres with Malco Trio. "We also recognize and commend the heroic efforts of the individuals and organizations who have worked so tirelessly in the rescue and relief operations."

Break-in at Sikeston post office investigated

SIKESTON, Mo. -- U.S. Postal inspectors are offering up to a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for breaking into post office boxes at the Sikeston Post Office over the weekend. The break-ins occurred between 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

Sikeston police reported 10 post office boxes were damaged when the clear front was broken out.

Tennessee man dies from injuries in accident

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. -- A Tennessee man sustained fatal injuries in an early morning accident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred at 12:33 a.m. Monday on Interstate 55, four miles north of Portageville, when a vehicle driven south by Patrice Armstrong, 33, of Bartlett, Tenn., went off the right side of the road and struck a ditch embankment.

A passenger, Herbert Harding, 42, of Henning, Tenn., was taken to Missouri Delta Medical in Sikeston and died.

A second passenger, Kevin Armstrong, 12, and the driver were injured Patrice Armstrong was taken by air ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
