Man guilty of taking bear across state lines

A Kennett, Mo., man pleaded guilty in federal court in Cape Girardeau Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of illegally transporting a black bear. Mark William Wiseman, 33, admitted to illegally shooting a black bear with a bow in Howell County in October 2003 and transporting it to Arkansas to be checked because Missouri doesn't have a bear season. He then took the animal back to his home and later to a taxidermist in Arkansas. The federal Lacy Act prohibits the interstate transfer of any animal taken in violation of any statute. Wiseman agreed to pay a $2,500 fine and to forfeit the bear skin and the bow used to shoot the bear.
