Lewis and Clark meeting today

A general meeting of the Cape Girardeau Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission will be at 7 p.m. today at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, 100 Broadway.

Construction of the Red House replica, the archeological dig and re-enactment plans will be discussed. Groups will be set up to help with fund raising and construction. Construction is to begin in May and continue through September.

Hitchcock film series offered this semester

Southeast Missouri State University's "British Hitch" film series this spring semester highlights Alfred Hitchcock's pre-American thrillers.

The schedule: "The 39 Steps" on Feb. 26, "The Lady Vanishes" on April 3, "Frenzy" on April 26.

The film series is free and open to the public. Show times for all the movies will be 5:30 p.m. in Parker Building Room 108. Refreshments will be served.

Physics prof receives state teaching award

Jai Dahiya, a Southeast Missouri State University physics professor, has received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Gov. Bob Holden recently honored 66 higher education faculty in the state. Recipients were selected by their respective institutions for their effective teaching and advising, service to the school community, commitment to excellence and success in nurturing student achievement.

Dahiya has taught at Southeast since 1984.

GLAAD official speaking at SEMO Wednesday

A coordinator for the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation will speak at two programs Wednesday at Southeast Missouri State University.

The speaker, Bill Belzer, will discuss "Public Perception and Media Bias: The Role of the News Industry in Perpetuating Stereotypes."

Belzer will speak during the Common Hour presentation at noon in the University Center Ballroom. He will also be featured during an open forum at 7 p.m. in Crisp Hall's Dempster Auditorium. The event is open to the public.

Jury selection starts today in murder retrial

WARRENTON, Mo. -- A Poplar Bluff, Mo., man is set to be tried again on first-degree murder charges in connection with the murder of a New Madrid County teen-ager and her grandmother.

The jury selection will begin today for Cecil Barriner, who is charged in the murder of Candace Sisk, 19, and her 73-year-old grandmother, Irene Sisk.

The Sisks were stabbed to death in their Tallapoosa home on Dec. 16, 1996.

The retrial was ordered after the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that prejudicial evidence and testimony were allowed in Barriner's 1999 trial.
