Cape man shot in foot following Sunday fight

A 36-year-old Cape Girardeau man was shot in his right foot early Sunday morning following an apparent street fight with another man in the 800 block of Jefferson Street, police said.

While on foot patrol, police overheard two shots and went running toward the scene, said officer Jason Selzer.

The injured man limped up to police and described the clothes worn by the attacker to them, but told them he didn't know who the shooter was. The victim said the man was "acting cocky" and got into a fight with him.

The man was taken to a local hospital but the wound was not life-threatening, Selzer said.

The attacker was described as wearing a red shirt over a white shirt and being about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

The victim, 62, said a young man wearing dark clothes came up behind him and struck his head with a piece of concrete before taking his wallet. The assault didn't cause him to lose consciousness.

The suspect, who appeared to be between the ages of 16 and 21 years old, fled on foot. The victim rode his bicycle home before calling police.

Ulises Gutierrez, 30, of Jackson, was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for statutory rape.

The defendant pleaded guilty April 14 to having sex with a 14-year-old girl. As part of his plea agreement, a second statutory rape and a count of statutory sodomy were dismissed by the prosecutor's office.

Gutierrez is currently free on $25,000 bond. He is to report to the Cape Girardeau County Jail on Friday afternoon to begin his sentence.

Cape man fails to register as convicted sex offender

Convicted sex offender Timothy T. Glas, 35, of Cape Girardeau got credit for the 10 weeks he's already been in Cape Girardeau County Jail, but has at least six more months to go before he'll be released. Glas was sentenced Monday to eight months for failing to register as a sex offender.

Glas was convicted in 1985 in Des Moines, Iowa, for indecent exposure with a juvenile.

Cape Girardeau police arrested him March 26 after an investigation into a reported child abduction attempt led police to question him. Up until his arrest, Glas worked part-time as a children's gymnastics coach in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

Assistant prosecutor Julie Hunter listed further examples of Glas' alleged sexual behaviors before asking for the maximum sentence of one year in jail.

"I feel Mr. Glas is a danger to the community," she said to Judge Gary Kamp. "He continues to put himself in positions in which he has access to young girls."
