Sikeston schools react to bomb scare

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Law enforcement officers responded to a bomb scare Wednesday morning that prompted school officials to lock down the Sikeston High School and a nearby elementary school for nearly two hours. An off-duty detective with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety spotted an item on Pine Street that looked like an improvised explosive. Officers with the region's bomb squad removed the device using a robot. It was later determined it wasn't a bomb, authorities said.

Cape man charged with domestic assault

A Cape Girardeau man faces felony domestic assault charges over an attack that left a woman with a bloody lip and a swollen eye. Carlton E. Gary, 54, of 3109 Themis St., No. 2, was arrested on a single felony count for an incident that took place Wednesday. He posted $5,000 bond at the Cape Girardeau County Jail. Gary is charged with a class C felony, which carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison.
