Cape man faces assault, burglary charges

A Cape Girardeau man was charged over the weekend with beating his girlfriend and pulling a knife on an arresting officer. Police responded to 926 S. Pacific St. around 12:44 a.m. Sunday on a call of domestic assault, according to police spokesman Jason Selzer. They arrived to find a broken door, shattered glass and Kenneth E. Brown, 38, of 205 S. Middle St., stomping and kicking the head of his 44-year-old girlfriend, Selzer said. An officer pulled out his Taser and ordered Brown to step outside the home, which he did. Once outside, Brown reached behind his back and pulled out a kitchen knife, Selzer said. The officer put away his Taser and drew his handgun, to which Brown responded by dropping his knife. Brown is charged with felony burglary, domestic assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He was also charged with misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia for a crack pipe that was found on him following his arrest. Bond was set at $25,000.

Two area stores burglarized Monday

Two Cape Girardeau stores were burglarized, and police Monday were investigating whether the crimes were connected. Edgewater Store, 324 S. Plaza Way, reported a damaged garage door panel and the theft of money, according to a police station commander who declined to be named. Around the corner, USA Mattress Outlet, 2228 Bloomfield St., reported a broken window and money stolen from the business. Police were also investigating whether the burglaries were related to a broken window at PDQ Quality Printing, 334 S. Plaza Way, the station commander said. Nothing was stolen from the store. The thefts and damages were reported around 7:30 a.m. Monday. No one was in custody.

Cape man sentenced on meth charges

A Cape Girardeau man was sentenced last week to nearly 12 years in federal prison on methamphetamine charges. U.S. District Judge Jean C. Hamilton handed down the 140-month sentence Friday for David A. Amos, 26. Amos had pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of pseudoephedrine, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway. In his plea, Amos admitted to selling meth to confidential informants in Cape Girardeau on Aug. 29, 2004, the release stated. During the sale, Amos talked to the informants about the two providing him with pseudoephedrine pills to manufacture into meth. On Sept. 2, 2004, the informants gave Amos 2,500 pseudoephedrine pills containing 174 grams of actual pseudoephedrine, the release stated. After a short foot chase with officers, Amos was arrested.

Talent representative scheduled in Jackson

A representative from the office of Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., was scheduled to appear in Jackson as part of a community outreach effort. Jeff Glenn, district director of Talent's Southeast Missouri office, will be available at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Cape Girardeau County Administrative Office Building, 1 Barton Square. The program, "Missouri Matters," will allow residents to meet with Glenn to discuss important local issues and request assistance with federal matters.
