Information sessions planned at Southeast

Southeast Missouri State University will hold a "Show Me" Day at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 2 in the Show Me Center. Students and parents will have the opportunity to learn about student life, academics, housing options and financing education. Additional financial aid information will be available during a "College Goal Sunday" program from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 10 in Glenn Auditorium in Dempster Hall on the Southeast campus. Students and parents will receive help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. One student will receive a $500 scholarship for attending the event. Illinois high school gets $34,075 grant from state

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School received $34,075 from a state "fast growth" grant because student enrollment increased by more than 7.5 percent over the past two years. Throughout Illinois, 43 districts received the grant.

Endowed scholarship established at Southeast

An endowed scholarship has been established at Southeast Missouri State University by alumni Michael and Linda Hudson, of Keller, Texas, in honor of their son, Mark, who died in 2006. Mark Hudson was a student at Baylor University and a member of the fraternity Sigma Nu. Only Sigma Nu members will be eligible for the scholarship.

Southeast Missourian wins nine awards

The Southeast Missourian won nine awards in the Suburban Newspapers of America 2007 Editorial Contest, up from five awards in 2005. Business Today, edited by Rudi Keller, won second place for Best Business Publication. The Southeast Missourian's Arts and Leisure section that ran June 8, 15, and 22 and was edited by Matt Sanders won third place for best entertainment/ lifestyle section. T.J. Greaney was awarded first place for Best Opinion Column, Exile on Main Street, and Toby Carrig's "Fact or Fiction" received third place for best sports writing. "Mixed Martial Arts," by photographer Kit Doyle, placed second for Best Sports Photo. The newspaper won second and third place for Best Continuing Coverage, for stories on Cape Girardeau's sign ordinance and the city's new federal courthouse. Bob and Callie Miller's stories about Tiffani Murray, a girl with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, won third place for Best Feature Series. Matt Sanders took away the third place award for Best Arts & Entertainment Writing-Feature for the story "Optimism, Joy and Celebration."
