Students in Cape Girardeau public schools are observing Red Ribbon week this week, an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
Red ribbons and buttons have been distributed to students throughout the district. Teachers and staff have also been encouraged to wear the ribbons and buttons.
A variety of activities have been planed by the drug prevention teams functioning at each school, said Bill Askew Jr., coordinator of the Drug Free Schools program.
At L.J. Schultz, for example, Wednesday was wear red day. The class with the largest percentage of students wearing red clothing will be treated to a pizza party. During the week, students are also being asked to write an essay on why it is important to live a drug-free life.
