'Red Door' church offers breakfast

The Rev. Bob Towner has gotten used to telling people his church is the one with the red door.

So when he and church members planned to kick off a free breakfast on the third Saturday of each month, coming up with a name was easy.

The first Red Door Breakfast is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St.

Towner said volunteers from the community and church will prepare the meal, but he's not sure how many will show up.

"Our target is a four-block radius of the church," he said. "But anyone in the city is welcome."

He was inspired by St. Vincent de Paul's "Vincent's Vittles" meal on the last Saturday of each month and wanted to help.

"It's a creative, Christian thing to do," he said. "We don't know if we'll have 20 or 120. We have no idea. But I'm sure by December, the room is going to be full."

The breakfast is as much an outreach to area residents who need meals as it is to those who may be shy about attending services.

"It's a way for people to get to know us, people who don't think they'd be welcome in the church because they don't have a clean shirt," he said. "They would be welcomed."
